Family therapists and counsellors help people – including families, couples and other groups – improve their communication and problem solving together in a safe environment. Ideally the whole family unit attends the sessions, or whoever is able to make it. Many mental health issues can be improved with attention to family dynamics, attending to what is, or what is not, spoken.
There are many forms of family therapy, including structural, functional, transgenerational, couples therapy, supportive therapy and psychoeducation. Each therapist will typically specialise in one or several modes of therapy, though many will use a mix of treatments. Most therapies are usually short term, though some families find a longer-term approach to be beneficial.
