If you’re not sure whether a full assessment is the right step, the free adult ADHD screening test below is a reasonable place to begin. It takes about two minutes. The six questions are the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1) Part A, the short screener developed for the World Health Organization and used by clinicians internationally, reproduced here in full and unaltered. It is the same instrument, not an imitation of it.
People often look for an ADHD test online and find dozens of them. It’s worth being clear about what any of them can do: a screener sorts people into “worth assessing” and “probably not”, and that’s all. There is no blood test, brain scan or questionnaire that diagnoses ADHD. Diagnosis rests on a clinical history taken by a specialist. We have written more about what a free online ADHD test can and cannot tell you, including why a negative result is much weaker than a positive one.
It will tell you whether your responses suggest ADHD-related symptoms are present, and whether a specialist assessment is likely to be worthwhile. It is a screening test, not a diagnosis. It cannot confirm ADHD and it cannot rule it out. The two results are not equally strong: in the validation study the screener correctly cleared 99.5% of adults who did not have ADHD, but identified only 68.7% of those who did (Kessler et al., 2005). A positive result is worth acting on. A negative result misses close to one in three, so if you have wondered about this for years, a negative screen has not settled it.

Most adults who come to us have wondered about ADHD for a long time. Many were never assessed as children, and a good number arrive after their own child’s diagnosis prompted them to look at their own history differently.

Before the appointment
You’ll need a referral from your GP for Medicare rebates to apply. You can book before the referral arrives and our team will coordinate the timing. We send a rating scale pack ahead of the appointment, with a version for you and, where possible, one for someone who knew you as a child or knows you well now.
The initial consultation: 50 to 60 minutes
A structured consultation with a specialist covering your developmental history, how the difficulties show up now at work, at home and in relationships, what you’ve already tried, and what prompted you to seek an assessment. Any previous reports or assessments you have are reviewed as part of the picture.
Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disturbance and substance use either sit alongside ADHD or account for the symptoms outright, and separating them is the substance of the assessment rather than a formality. These are screened as standard. Where ADHD is not the right answer you’ll be told clearly, with an explanation of what the assessment did find.
The follow-up: 30 minutes
A second session covering the findings, the diagnosis or the reason one isn’t indicated, and what a management plan looks like. Where medication is appropriate it’s discussed here rather than started on the spot, so you can take the information away and decide.
What you receive
- A written report and management plan, sent to you and to your referring GP
- A diagnostic formulation, or a clear explanation of why ADHD isn’t indicated
- Findings on any co-occurring conditions, and recommended next steps
- An eScript within 1–3 business days where medication is clinically indicated, in line with the regulations in your state or territory
- Recommendations for ongoing care, including shared care with your GP
Who conducts the assessment
Assessments are conducted by FRANZCP-qualified psychiatrists and, for younger patients, FRACP-qualified paediatricians, the same specialists you would see in a public or private clinic, accessible by telehealth. Cost and Medicare
Pandion Health is a private practice. Medicare rebates are available for eligible psychiatrist and paediatrician consultations when you have a valid referral, which reduces the out-of-pocket cost but does not cover it entirely. Assessment is also available through the public system in most states via your GP, at no cost. Availability and waiting times vary considerably by state and by age, and your GP can advise on what the pathway looks like where you live. How long you’ll wait
Appointments at Pandion are typically available within 2 to 4 weeks, subject to clinician availability and your preferences. Because the service is delivered by telehealth, where you live doesn’t affect how quickly you’re seen.
What happens after diagnosis
Diagnosis is the beginning of ADHD care rather than the end of it. Where medication is clinically appropriate, treatment is started and reviewed, and we can arrange ongoing specialist review, shared care alongside your GP, or handback to your GP with a full clinical summary, depending on the complexity of the presentation and what you prefer.

Is the screening test a diagnosis?
No. It indicates whether ADHD-related symptoms are present and whether a specialist assessment is likely to be worthwhile. The screener is accurate at clearing people who do not have ADHD and much weaker at catching those who do, identifying about 69% of them, so a negative result does not rule ADHD out. Only a specialist assessment can answer the question properly.
Can my GP take over prescribing after diagnosis?
In many cases yes. Co-prescribing and handback arrangements are supported in line with the regulations in each state and territory, and the arrangement is decided case by case.
