ADHD assessment and treatment

Neel is a consultant general adult psychiatrist with two decades of experience across a wide range of psychiatric presentations. He assesses and treats ADHD in adults, and his breadth is what makes him useful for the harder cases: an adult with ADHD alongside a long psychiatric history, a presentation that has been treated as something else for years, or a diagnosis that has never quite fitted.

ADHD is rarely the only thing present. Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disturbance and substance use either sit alongside it or account for the symptoms outright, and separating them is the substance of the assessment. At Pandion these are screened as standard rather than treated as an optional extra. Where ADHD is not the right answer, Neel will say so and explain what he thinks is going on instead.

He also provides second opinions for diagnostic clarification, which is worth knowing about if you have been assessed before and left unconvinced, or if a diagnosis has not led anywhere useful.

How he works

Neel takes the view that treating mental illness depends not only on medication but on strengthening four things together: the biological, the psychological, the social and the spiritual. He works closely with patients’ family members and advocates where that is wanted.

He supports personal recovery alongside clinical recovery, and is direct about the fact that talking to a psychiatrist takes courage, given what a psychiatric assessment asks people to share. Making that experience as straightforward and comfortable as possible is part of the work rather than incidental to it.

He speaks several languages, including Hindi and Bengali.

Background and training

Neel completed his medical degree and postgraduate psychiatry training overseas, then trained and was accredited as a consultant psychiatrist by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

Alongside his work with Pandion Health, he works as a clinician and a teacher of psychiatry in tertiary hospitals in Perth, Western Australia.

His clinical experience spans psychosis and schizophrenia, mood and bipolar disorders, anxiety and panic, sleep difficulties, ADHD and autism, OCD, PTSD and phobias, postnatal depression, personality disorders, addiction, and the mental health of war veterans. He assesses for CBT and DBT and refers where those are indicated.
