Adult ADHD assessment

Most adults who come to us have suspected ADHD for a while. Many were never assessed as children, and a good number arrive after their own child’s diagnosis prompted them to look at their history differently.

An adult assessment involves a structured psychiatric consultation covering your developmental history, how the difficulties present now at work and at home, and what has been tried already. Rating scales are completed by you and, where possible, by someone who knew you as a child or knows you well now.

ADHD is rarely the only thing present. Anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep disturbance and substance use either sit alongside it or account for the symptoms outright, and separating them is the substance of the assessment. These are screened as standard rather than treated as an optional extra.

Where ADHD is not the right answer, you’ll be told that clearly, with an explanation of what the assessment did find and what the next step should be. An assessment is worth having either way: if it isn’t ADHD, it may be something else that responds well to treatment.

Where a diagnosis is made and medication is appropriate, treatment is discussed rather than started on the spot, and we can arrange shared care or handback to your GP in line with the regulations in your state or territory. How online psychiatry works

Before the appointment

A referral is needed for Medicare rebates: from a GP for a psychiatrist, or from another specialist. We send rating scales ahead of the appointment where they are relevant to the assessment.

The initial consultation

You meet with a psychiatrist by secure video. This may be a one-off consultation, or the start of ongoing care. The psychiatrist takes a full history, reviews any reports or previous assessments you have, and forms a picture of what is happening and why.

Assessment and recommendations

You receive an assessment and, where requested, a written report setting out the findings, the diagnosis or the reason one isn’t indicated, and the treatment options. Your referring GP receives a report and management plan.

Follow-up care

Where it’s needed we offer medication review, integration with therapy, and shared care with your GP or psychologist. Telepsychiatry suits most people, including those in rural and remote areas and anyone who needs timely access to a specialist.

Medicolegal and forensic reports

Alongside clinical work, our psychiatrists prepare forensic assessments and expert medicolegal reports, including:
