How an assessment works

Before the appointment

You’ll need a valid GP referral for Medicare rebates. Your child can be booked before the referral arrives and our team will coordinate the timing. We send a rating scale pack ahead of the appointment, matched to your child’s age and presentation, with versions for you and for someone who sees your child in another setting, usually a teacher.

The initial consultation: 50 to 60 minutes

You’ll meet online with one of our paediatricians to go through your concerns, your child’s developmental and medical history, what’s happening at school and at home, and what you’re hoping to get from the assessment. Where you have school reports or previous allied health assessments, these are reviewed as part of the picture.

What the assessment covers

ADHD is rarely the whole picture. Anxiety, autism, learning difficulties, sleep disturbance and developmental delay either sit alongside it or account for the presentation outright, and separating them is the substance of the assessment. These are screened as standard rather than treated as an optional extra.

Where ADHD is not the right answer, you’ll be told that clearly, with an explanation of what is going on instead and what the next step should be.

The follow-up: 30 minutes

A second session to go through the findings, the diagnosis or the reason a diagnosis isn’t indicated, and what a management plan looks like. Where medication is appropriate it is discussed here rather than started on the spot: families are given information to take away, weigh up, and come back to.

• A written report and management plan, sent to you and to your referring GP
• A report suitable for school funding applications and classroom accommodations
• Findings on any co-occurring conditions, and recommended next steps
• An eScript within 1–3 business days where medication is clinically indicated, in line with the regulations in your state or territory
• Recommendations for ongoing care, including shared care with your GP where that suits your family

Our paediatricians

Our paediatricians are FRACP-qualified specialists with clinical interests spanning ADHD, autism, neurodevelopmental and behavioural paediatrics, developmental disability, adolescent health and neonatal medicine. Several hold appointments in public hospitals and children’s health services alongside their work with Pandion.

What ages do you see?

Birth to 18 years. Individual clinicians have their own age ranges within that, and we’ll match your child to the right paediatrician when you book.

How quickly will my child be seen?

Appointments are typically available within 2 to 4 weeks, subject to clinician availability and your preferences. There is no public waiting list to join.

Do I need a GP referral?

Yes, a valid GP referral is required to access Medicare rebates. Your child can be booked before the referral arrives, and our team will coordinate the timing. You can also contact us to talk through the options first.

How much does it cost?

Current fees and the Medicare rebates that apply are set out on our pricing page. Pandion Health is a private practice and rebates are available for eligible consultations with a valid referral.

Can a paediatrician diagnose ADHD or autism?

Yes. Our paediatricians assess and diagnose ADHD, autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, and coordinate input from psychologists or allied health where that’s needed.

What happens if it isn’t ADHD?

You’ll be told clearly, with an explanation of what the assessment did find and what the next step should be. The report reflects the full clinical picture rather than a negative finding alone. An assessment is worth having either way: if it isn’t ADHD, it may be something else that can be treated.

Is medication prescribed by telehealth?

Where it is clinically appropriate, yes, with follow-up and monitoring. An eScript is sent to you within 1–3 business days of the assessment, in line with the regulations in your state or territory.

Do you work with schools and other providers?

Yes. With your consent we can share reports and work alongside schools, GPs and other health professionals involved in your child’s care.
